Roleplaying games have been my favorite video game genre since I discovered them messing around on the old Apple II computer my grandma had in her basement. Text-based games, such as Zork, were my introduction to the genre. I really fell in love with RPGs when I discovered the game Dragon Warrior on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I still consider this game one of my personal 100 Greatest RPGs of All Time.
Final Fantasy Marathon
While Dragon Warrior was my first love, the Final Fantasy series is my overall favorite. It has long been my goal to play the entire series from start to finish. Final Fantasy VI, originally released as Final Fantasy III in the United States, ranks as the #2 Greatest RPG of All Time on IGN’s top 100 list.
Final Fantasy IV gets the #22 spot. Final Fantasy XII is ranked #31. Final Fantasy IX is ranked #40. Final Fantasy VII clocks in at #52. The original Final Fantasy claims #83. That gives the series six spots in the 100 Greatest RPGs list.
Many versions of these games exist. Since I am primarily a PC gamer, I will choose the versions I can play on my PC, starting with Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster I – VI.
This series updates the NES and SNES classics with new music, pixel-style 2D graphics, and some quality of life improvements, such as in-game maps and less grinding. I have already played through all of these games. This will be a replay.
While these versions turn down the difficulty level more than I’d like, I highly recommend them for the maps and the wonderful music. If you’ve never played these classic games, this is a good place to start. If you’re a veteran, I think you’ll enjoy the updates.
You can follow along with my progress on this blog. Happy gaming!
